Workshop Coming up SOON

Candace&Jason58

A few days ago, I got together with these two love birds. Yes, they are engaged, but this wasn’t an engagement session. They were just kind enough to let me photograph them so I can show real life examples of all the things I’ll be teaching during the workshop. I cannot thank them enough! I took them to some pretty questionable locations and they just went with it! Candace and Jason, you were so incredible, I cannot wait to photograph you during a real session.

So here’s a tiny little sneak peek of what we will be covering during the workshop:

White Balance:

Focal Lengths:

Depth of Field and Lens compression:

How to make pretty images in ugly locations:

And by ugly, I mean really ugly:

(And another HUGE thank you to Emily. Emily used to be my intern while in high school. She’s now working on a photojournalism degree, but she was in town and graciously offered to help and take all of the behind the scene photos)

Focal Points:

And much much more! I just finished up all my slides for the workshop and can’t wait to share!

Thank you again Candace and Jason and Emily!

It’s been almost one month since my last blog post. Ever since then, I have traveled to Florida, had five different guests come stay with us, renovated our kitchen, had my birthday, my husband’s birthday,  hosted my workshop, and 2nd shot a wedding with a friend. I have so much to blog I wasn’t sure where to start!

I hosted my last workshop on April 2nd and (as you can see from the photo above) it was such a fun group! Jenny was our lovely model and a blast to photograph. Here are some images from the “shooting” portion of the day:

Fancy Camera Workshop Images (10.9.10)

Last week I was so excited to host yet another Fancy Camera Workshop. I’m so lucky to have so many wonderful photographers chose to spend an afternoon with me. As per usual, we spent the morning talking about the technical elements of photography as well as all the fun compositional elements. We took a break to eat lunch and then headed out to meet our models for the photoshoot part of the day. I had never met Jessica and Rob before, but they were so wonderful! It’s not easy to have so many people pointing a camera at you, but they have incredible personalities and made it look easy.

I’ve changed the structure of the photoshoot part of the day to give each participant time to direct the models. I started the afternoon by shooting and explaining what I’m looking for, sharing my camera settings and then allowing each participant to take control of the shoot and also to take photos of each other. For this reason, I didn’t shoot much, but here are some of my favorite images:

And here’s a peek at the behind the scenes. Thanks everyone for making it special and so much fun!If you are interested in attending the next Fancy Camera Worshop, email me to reserve your spot now!

Fancy Camera Workshop Images (5.30.10)

Yesterday I hosted another Fancy Camera Workshop and it was an amazing day full of learning and a seriously awesome group of ladies. And as you can see from the photo above, a very gorgeous bunch. From left to right. Back row: Ashely, Andrea, Anita, Emilia, Erica, and Irma (the birthday girl!). Front row: Janel, Asia, Tina, Crista, Leah, Jessica, and Nicole. By the way, this is the second time that I have two of my brides at the workshop. I wonder if the trend will continue? So fun!

It was a super hot day out but these girls were troopers as well as Kristin & Chad, our models for the day. I didn’t shoot a lot, but I thought I should share some of the images of this super sweet couple. Thank you two so much!

If you are interested in attending a Fancy Camera Workshop, please e-mail me at cristi@cristiowen.com or leave a comment below. Thanks and I’ll see you soon :)

Fancy Camera Workshop – May 30th!

Hi Everyone,

I’m announcing the next date for my Fancy Camera Workshop… May 30th!

This workshop is for everyone who owns a Fancy Camera (one with a manual setting) and would like to know all about it and take much better pictures with it. If you want to purchase this as a gift to someone, I can mail you a gift certificate for the workshop! This would be an awesome Mother’s Day gift.

This will be my third workshop, and I’ve made some fun changes based on the suggestions from previous attendees. Here’s the gist of it:

AM: I will talk your ears off! We will cover the technical stuff and the fun stuff with plenty of time for questions.

noonish: We will eat lunch :)

early PM: We will go out and practice everything we discussed in the morning. I will have “models” for a mock photoshoot, but I will also have the attendees photograph each other. This will give everyone a chance to take control over lighting/background/composition and practice directing their own models, as well as give everyone some new pictures for their facebook profile :)

PM: I will show you all my images, pick a few favorites, post-process one or two images and then give everyone time to go through their images. You will pick two or three favorites, post-process them and we will have a group critique of everyone’s images.

Yes, it’s a really long day, full of learning, lots of laughing, sharing and more learning. I hope you are excited to join me! There are 10 spots open.

What is it?

A workshop to help you take full advantage of your fancy camera. You know, the camera you paid a lot of money for and have been using on auto, AV or TV and not getting the results you want (or should be getting) by using your M (manual) setting.

Here’s an overview of our day together:

• Introductions
• The Technical Stuff (exposure)
• The Fun Stuff (compositional elements)
• Equipment: What’s What
• LUNCH (included)
• Assignment/Hands-on Practice Outside
• Post Processing
• Sharing of Images/Critique

Fancy Camera Workshop – Behind the Scenes

What a wonderful group of beautiful and talented people. Thank you God for the coolest workshop attendees ever!

And  here are a few shots from our awesome day together. Courtesy of my husband. Thanks, Curt!

Shooting in full sun is not ideal, but sometimes it’s your only option. Therefore we practiced some of that as well:

I love everyone’s commitment here. So glad Curt captured this as I was busy answering questions and never even saw it happen:

We got pretty lucky with this blue garage door to add a little color to some of our images:

Dustin and Teresa seem pretty happy with their new-found skills:

During panning practice:

I don’t think I can ever fully express how much I loved everyone who came to the workshop. You were all so great and I hope from the bottom of my heart that you enjoyed our day together and walked away with not only knowledge, but excitement for what the future holds for you and your photography.

You can see some of the Fancy Camera Workshop images here.
